FAQ

How do the aroma zones work?

3. Rounding:
The upper zone prevents the development of a bitter taste and guarantees a rounded aroma.

2. Refine:
The middle zone supports an even brewing and refines the aroma of your coffee.

1. Unfolding:
The lowest zone, the so-called aroma zone, is responsible for the first aroma development.

What is so special about melitta natura filter bags??

Good for your coffee and nature: The filter bags are made of 40% fast-growing bamboo.

What is the difference between the natural brown and white filter bags?

A difference you can see but not taste. Because the properties of both filter papers are completely the same. Natural brown coffee filters are unbleached, white coffee filters are only bleached with natural oxygen. All our coffee filters are of course compostable.

Are the Melitta® filterbags glued?

No, the Melitta® filterbags are just pressed..

Why do I have to fold the filter paper before inserting it?

To ensure optimum coffee preparation, the filter paper must be moulded to fit the shape of the filter exactly. This is done by folding over the two crimped edges. The filter paper then nestles perfectly with the edge of the filter and sits deep in the filter insert. This good fit means that the paper will not fold in on itself during the brewing process.

What exactly does "1x4®" mean in terms of filter papers?

When filter papers were in their infancy, there were no coffee makers - in those days, coffee was brewed by hand. To do this, filters and filter paper sizes 100, 102® etc. - depending on the number of cups required - had to have water poured over them several times over. It was only possible to estimate how much coffee would then finally end up in the pot. During the 1960s, Melitta® invented the "1x filters system". Depending on the size selected, only "1x" amount of water needed to be poured over the coffee with these new filters and filter papers (i.e. 1x2 filter paper poured over 1x = 2 cups of coffee, 1x4® filter paper poured over 1x = 4 cups, etc.) and offered the correct number of cups - a boon for coffee lovers. For a long time, both the 100x series and the 1x series existed in parallel, since households still had filter bodies for both types. Nowadays, virtually all machines use "1x4®" filter papers, because they offer the perfect size for the quantity of water and coffee required in the main 8-10-cup appliance sector.

How does the filter paper stay intact?

Filter paper has two seams that are not glued together, but are rather crimped together. In other words, it is this crimping that keeps the filter paper intact.

Which size of filter paper fits into my coffee maker?
All in all, there are seven different sizes of filter paper available in shops. The various sizes have arisen over time for various reasons (see: "What exactly does "1x4®" mean in terms of filter paper?"). Indications on the correct size of filter paper can be found in the operating instructions for your coffee machine, or on the filter itself. The right size is particularly important, since otherwise there is a risk of the filter tearing or folding over.

The grinder is making a loud noise.

There may be a foreign object in the grinder. Please contact the hotline.

Why is the water grey after inserting the Claris® waterfilter?

The greyish water is produced by the activated carbon, which is flushed out immediately after the water filter has been inserted. This is a common process and absolutely harmless to health.

The brewing unit will not fit back in place after being removed.

The motor might not be in the correct position. Check if the water tank is filled and if the drip tray is in place. Turn the appliance OFF and then ON again. Then simultaneously press the button for My-Coffee and the on/off button for more than 2 seconds. The motor will move into the correct position. Insert the brewing unit again and check that it is correctly locked in position.

Which mobile phones are supported by the Melitta® Connect app?

Bluetooth low-energy support is also essential.

Where can I download the Melitta® Connect App?

First, make sure your smartphone is supported by the Melitta® Connect app. The installation requires 50MB (Android) or 70MB (iOS) free disk space.

The app can be downloaded from the Google Play store or the iOS app store under 'Melitta® Connect'. To fully synchronize the app content a stable Internet connection is required when the app is initially launched.

Why must location access be allowed to connect the Android app?

Location sharing is a system requirement of Android to use Bluetooth. In addition to permission, location access to your Android setting must also be enabled. However, no location data is recorded or stored by our app.

The smartphone cannot connect to the bean to cup machine!

First, make sure that neither the smartphone nor the bean to cup machine is connected to another device.
The Bluetooth connection must be made through the app, not via the device settings of the smartphone. If you have already connected the smartphone via the device settings, first delete the pairing and establish a connection via the app afterwards.

To connect to the Bean to cup machine, successful pairing (initial connection) must have taken place first. Activate Bluetooth on your smartphone and make sure you are connected to the Internet. Activate Bluetooth pairing (60 seconds counter counts down) in the menu of your coffee machine under Bluetooth -> Connect. In the app under Connection to device, search for your bean to cup machine (serial number) and select it to connect. After this one-off pairing, the connection to the bean to cup machine only has to be activated from the App. To do this, search for your bean to cup machine (serial number) in the App under connection to appliance and select it to connect.
The smartphone must be in the reception area (about 5 to 10 meters) and Bluetooth must be activated.

If you have problems with the connection, delete all existing connections in the menu of your Barista Smart® under Settings-Bluetooth-Factory reset. If necessary, delete the pairing in your mobile phone under Settings-Bluetooth-Barista select serial number-Cancel/delete connection. Now you can pair and connect again.

Barista TS Smart®: When Auto-Bean-Select is deactivated, the beans are only taken from one coffee bean compartment!

If the Auto-Bean-Select is deactivated, both bean compartments are treated as one large bean compartment. The coffee bean compartment is only changed when one of the bean chambers is empty. This only makes sense if the same type of coffee is used in both bean chambers. If different beans are used, the Auto-Bean-Select must be activated. The bean compartment can then be changed for each recipe.

The MyCoffee function can also be used to personalise the type of coffee for individual users:

User 1: Coffee with bean compartment 1

User 2: Coffee with bean compartment 2

Which type of bean goes into which chamber in the bean container?

The left chamber is for espresso beans (dark roast beans), the right chamber is for coffee; crème beans (light roast beans). In the menu you can change the allocation of bean chambers to the recipes manually or you can completely deactivate the Bean Select.

Why does it sound like the grinder is running on empty each time I make a coffee?

Each time you make coffee the grinder grinds until it is empty. This ensures that fresh coffee is used every time. After changing the bean type you immediately get mainly the new type of beans.

The coffee is too bitter.

a) There may be coffee deposits such as coffee oil in the brewing unit. Please clean the brewing unit with clean water. Pay special attention to coffee deposits on the sieve. If necessary run the cleaning programme with Melitta® PerfectCLEAN cleaning tabs.

b) The appliance may be calcified. Descale the appliance using the integrated descaling programme.

c) The grinder may be set too fine. During grinding, set for coarser grinding.

d) Did you use a different type of coffee? Our recommendation: Use premium products, for example Melitta® BellaCrema® coffee beans.

The coffee is too weak.

a) The beans might not be falling into the grinder. It is possible that beans are not falling into the grinder. This may be due to the beans being too oily. Clean the bean container with a damp cloth and normal mild washing up liquid. Ensure that no liquid gets into the grinder. If necessary tap lightly on the bean container.

b) The grinder may be set too coarse. During grinding, set for finer grinding.

c) Did you use a different type of coffee? Our recommendation: Use premium products, for example Melitta® BellaCrema® coffee beans. For espresso we recommend our espresso beans. You can buy them right here.

The coffee is too strong.

a) The coffee strength may be set too high. Reduce the coffee strength or increase the amount of water.

b) The grinder may be set too fine. During grinding, set for coarser grinding.

c) Did you use a different type of coffee? Our recommendation: Use premium products, for example Melitta® BellaCrema® coffee beans. For mild coffee we recommend Melitta® BellaCrema® Speciale. You can buy them right here.

The display for the bean container shows that it is full, although it is empty.

The sensor may be dirty or have a coffee bean stuck in front of it.

Please clean the bean container.

Why is no milk being sucked out of the milk container?

a) The suction tube on the milk container may not be correctly connected with the lid.

Check if the suction tube is correctly connected to the lid.

b) The milk tube may not be correctly connected to the outlet and/or to the milk container.

Check if the milk tube is correctly connected to the outlet and the milk container.

Can I also connect the milk container on the left side?

Yes. In the factory settings the milk container is connected on the right side. To change it to the left side, pull the milk tube from the outlet and push it right down. Unlock the milk container and pull it down and away from the outlet. Pull the milk dispenser up and out of the unit, turn it 180° and put it back into the milk unit. To change back, do all this in reverse order.

How does Easy Steam Cleaning work?

Easy Steam Cleaning uses hot water and steam to quickly and hygenically clean the parts which come into contact with milk. This should be carried out each time milk is used, or it can be chosen separately using the menu.

Why is it not possible to pour two cups using the americano and long black recipes?

As only one water outlet is available, you can only pour one cup of an americano or long black.

Which recipes can the CAFFEO® Barista® prepare?

It can prepare a total of 21 different varieties of coffee. You can find an overview here.

How do I call up the various recipes?

In the factory settings the recipes are in the "My Coffee" profiles 1-4. An overview of how the recipes are split into the profiles can be found in the insert in your welcome package or here. To call up a recipe, press the "My Coffee" button repeatedly to choose the "My Coffee" profile and then press the product button to get the drink you want.

In the menu you can change the recipes individually and save them to the product buttons and "My Coffee" profiles (see "permanently change drink settings").

Why is the product button for a particular drink not lighting up?

The bean chamber for that recipe is empty. Please refill with coffee beans.

Alternatively you could change the type of beans used on a one-off basis using the operating panel. In the menu you can permanently change the bean chambers used for the recipes or deactivate Automatic Bean Select completely. (see chapter "change basic settings" in the operating manual).

How do I call up the cleaning / descaling programme?

Press the button "menu/ok" for at least 2 seconds, so that the display in the menu changes. Choose the point "maintenance". Now you can choose between the various programmes for descaling or cleaning.

Are the individual components of the CAFFEO® Barista® dish washer safe?

The milk container (without lid), riser, used ground coffee container and drip tray can all be cleaned in the dish washer. The milk and brewing units can simply be cleaned under running water.

How do I clean the brewing unit?

The brewing unit can be wiped with a damp cloth or brushed with the brush from the cleaning kit. It can also be cleaned under running water.

A squeaking noise when making coffee and/or rinsing the outlet.

If you have a new appliance then such noises are nothing to worry about when the appliance is being used or rinsed the first few times. After a while the noises will stop.

How can I set the grinding degree?

The degree of grinding has been perfectly set before delivery. We recommend re-setting the grinding degree after 1000 cups of coffee (about a year).

To reset the degree of grinding, open the cover on the right side and make a coffee drink of your choice. When the grinder is working set the lever for grinder settings forward to grind more finely or back to grind more coarsely. Please note that it is only possible to reset the grinder when it is running, otherwise you could damage it. Close the cover when you have reset the grinder.

The display indicates that the drip tray should be emptied although I have just emptied it.

The drip tray should only be emptied when the machine is switched on. If you empty it when the machine is off, the sensor will not register that it has been emptied and this leads to an error message. With the machine switched on, pull out the drawer and then put it back in place.

How do I clean the appliance on the outside and generally?

Please turn the appliance off. Clean the appliance on the outside with a soft, damp cloth and normal washing up liquid. Do not use abrasive cloths, sponges or cleaning agents.

The drip tray and ground coffee container can also be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and washing up liquid. We recommend a soft, dry cloth to clean the bean container.

Bug fixing

The message "Fill with beans" shows in the display although the bean container is full.

The beans may not be falling into the grinder. This could be because they are too oily. Clean the bean container with a moist cloth and mild washing up liquid. If necessary tap lightly on the bean container.

The message "system error" shows in the display.

Turn the appliance off and then on again. It the message still shows then contact the hotline.

FAQs

Where can I dispose of my filter coffee maker at the end of its life??

Electrical appliances should not be disposed of with household waste. Please dispose of the device in an environmentally friendly manner using suitable collection systems.

Choice of coffee.

As a coffee expert Melitta® offers a wide selection of different roasted coffees. An overview of the variety of our coffees can be found on our website.

Choice of water.

As coffee consists of 98% water, the water quality has a big influence on the taste of your coffee. Therefore the water should not be too hard or too soft. Water hardness varies greatly from region to region. Whereas very soft water increases the acidity of coffee, very hard water reduces its acidity.

The coffee filter.

As a coffee expert Melitta® not only offers a wide variety of filter coffee machines but also a wide range of coffee filters. A particular size of coffee filter is necessary to ensure you get the best filter coffee enjoyment, the size depends on the coffee machine you use and the number of cups of coffee you want to make. Our range of coffee filters includes the product ranges Original, Gourmet and Natura. For a very special taste experience our Melitta Gourmet® coffee filters feature innovative AromaporenPLUS®, which increase the flow through of the fine coffee oils that contain over 800 coffee flavours. Melitta® Natura coffee filters focus on sustainability, 60% fast growing bamboo is used in their manufacture. Natura and Original coffee filters feature Aromazones which ensure the best coffee enjoyment.

Find an overview of our range of coffee filters as well as detailed information on our website and in our online shop.

Where can I buy accessories and replacement parts for my filter coffee machine?

Information on purchasing accessories and replacement parts for your filter coffee machine is available from your local Melitta® customer service department. Find contact information here.

Keeping coffee warm.

Keeping coffee warm on a hotplate for too long can make your coffee bitter and cause it to lose its flavour. Therefore, we recommend drinking your freshly brewed coffee straight after making it.

Storing your coffee.

Roast coffee is a sensitive natural product, which can quickly lose its flavour if stored in the wrong way. Therefore we recommend that you do not store the opened pack together with other strongly smelling foods. Protect your coffee from direct sunlight, heat and humidity, as these can negatively affect the flavour. Store in a cool, dry and odour free place. We also recommend storing your coffee in its original packaging.

Appliances with insulated pot

Is there a difference between insulated pots made of plastic and those made of stainless steel?

Stainless steel pots have a double walled stainless steel body and are therefore safe against shock and breakage. Plastic pots have a glass flask inside. To avoid damaging the glass flask do not use any hard or sharp edged objects (e.g. cutlery washing up brushes etc.) to clean or stir and do not use with ice cubes or carbonated drinks. Do not subject the glass flask to high variations in temperature.

How can I further improve the warm keeping time of my insulated pot?

To improve the warm keeping time of your insulated pot we recommend filling it with hot water shortly before use to heat the inside of the pot. Empty the pot shortly before the start of the brewing process and brew your coffee as usual straight into the insulated pot.

The inside of my insulated pot is soiled/discoloured, what can I do about this?

If this happens we recommend Melitta® Perfect Clean Accessories Cleaner. Its easily soluble formula with active oxygen cleans unpleasant coffee and tea deposits from standard insulated, stainless steel and glass pots. Please note that insulated pots are not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water when cleaning. To avoid damage to the glass flask do not use hard or sharp edged objects (e.g. cutlery, dishwashing brushes etc.) to clean.

How do I clean my insulated pot?

Please note that the insulated pots on our filter coffee machines are not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water when cleaning. Rinse the pot after each use with hot water. Clean the outer surfaces of insulated pots with a soft, damp cloth. To remove stubborn stains we recommend Melitta® Perfect Clean Accessories Cleaner. When cleaning plastic insulated pots with glass flasks, to avoid damage, please do not use hard or sharp edged objects (e.g. cutlery, dishwashing brushes or similar).

Features

What features does the AromaSelector® have and how does it work?

With the AromaSelector® from Melitta® you can individually adjust the taste of your coffee with just one touch – from mild & indulgent to strong & intensive. So you can always enjoy your coffee just the way you like it – strong and stimulating to wake you up in the morning and a mild feel-good coffee in the afternoon. The AromaSelector® is guaranteed to always give you the best taste, really conveniently, without changing your usual quantities of water or coffee.

How exactly does Aroma Premium Technology work and in which coffee machines is it included?

“Aroma Premium Technology” from Melitta® allows you to enjoy excellent filter coffee of the very highest standard. For this special quality the Melitta® AromaElegance® DeLuxe, the AromaSignature® series of appliances and the Excellent (Therm) Steel have been awarded the “Golden Bean” by the ECBC – an award only presented to coffee machines, which meet the highest European quality standards for coffee preparation. This is possible due to the special, high-performance heating and brewing technology, which guarantees optimal extraction of the filter coffee and also reduces the time taken to make your coffee.
The heater heats the water very quickly to the best brewing temperature and is able to maintain this temperature during the entire brewing process. This not only shortens the preparation time – it also creates the conditions for optimal coffee extraction (optimal contact time with the ground coffee, brewing temperature of 92-96°C).

What does the Aroma Control feature do?

With just one touch of the "Aroma Control“ button your Melitta® filter coffee machine gives you full aroma and the best flavour even with small amounts of coffee. The "Aroma Control" feature matches the brewing to smaller amounts of coffee, so that the coffee has enough time to release its full flavour and aroma.

Which appliances have a timer feature and how do I use it?

Some Melitta® filter coffee machines are equipped with a timer feature. The timer feature with LED display gives you seductive coffee enjoyment at a time set by you. Programme the start of brewing for your coffee machine and be woken up in the morning with the delicious smell of fresh coffee. The appliance switches itself on automatically at the time you set.

What does the Aroma valve do and which models have this feature?

Thanks to Melitta's® special hot brewing system, the hot water only comes into contact with the ground coffee when it has reached the optimal brewing temperature. Only then can the valuable flavours of your ground coffee be extracted in the best way - the coffee develops its full aroma and flavour and is at the perfect temperature for drinking. Available in our Melitta® Single 5 Models.

How does Melitta® support me in caring for my coffee machine? What is 3-in-1 limescale protection?

We would like you to enjoy your coffee machine for a long time. Therefore many of our filter coffee machines are equipped with a 3-in-1 limescale protection system. This enables you to set your machine to the local water hardness level, thereby setting descaling intervals perfectly to match your local water quality. When your filter coffee machine is calcified an illuminated LED light signals that it needs to be descaled. The practical descaling programme makes it easy to care for your machine and is programmed so that your Melitta® Anti Calc Filter coffee; Machines can work most effectively and completely free your machine from limescale.

Does my coffee machine turn off automatically?

When new EU regulations come into force on 01/01/2015, all filter coffee machines must be equipped with an automatic switch off. All Melitta® filter coffee machines fulfil these new requirements and switch off automatically after a programmed period of time.
In addition some of our models enable you to choose the warm keeping time yourself. According to your individual requirements you can set this for 20, 40 or 60 minutes.

Can I put glass pots or insulated pots into the microwave?

Our glass and insulated pots are not suitable for the microwave.

Power consumption of coffee machines in standby mode.

All Melitta coffee machines fulfil the requirements of the European Ecodesign Directive, which sets limits for power consumption in standby mode. The upper limit for power consumption, for appliances without a display is 0.5 W, for appliances with display 1W. Power consumption on all Melitta filter coffee machines is significantly lower than these limits. This is true even when the display light is on. For end consumers what is important is the physically defined effective power in watts. This has a direct influence on energy consumption and therefore on the electricity which is measured and shown on the household electricity meter. To measure the power used in standby, relatively inexpensive, so-called energy monitors are available in stores. These appliances often show not only the effective power, but also the apparent power with the units volt ampere (VA) and the reactive power volt*ampère* reactive (var). The apparent power consists of the reactive power and effective power together. For evaluation in relation to the legally stipulated maximal power consumption only the effective power is important.

Solve simple problems yourself

My coffee machine is louder than before during the brewing process. Why is this?

Longer brewing time is a sign of calcification in your coffee machine. Over time limescale deposits build up in the flow system and prevent water flowing through properly. As less water can flow through, the brewing time increases. This can be rectified and prevented by regular descaling. A list of symptoms caused by calcification can be found in the FAQ area calcification.

My coffee machine’s brewing time has increased. What should I do?

Longer brewing time is a sign of calcification in your coffee machine. Over time limescale deposits build up in the flow system and prevent water flowing through properly. As less water can flow through, the brewing time increases. This can be rectified and prevented by regular descaling. A list of symptoms caused by calcification can be found in the FAQ area calcification.

Over time the taste of the coffee has changed. Why is that?

Heavy limescale deposits prevent the water from coming into direct contact with the heater. This leads to a lower temperature and to worse extraction of the ground coffee. Limescale deposits can also cause limescale particles to get into the coffee and significantly affect the flavour. To continue to enjoy your coffee with the quality you are used to, you should regularly clean and descale your coffee machine. We recommend using Melitta® Anti Calc Filter coffee; Machines for this and we strongly advise against using household vinegar. Find out why you should not use products containing vinegar to descale your coffee machine in the FAQ area calcification.

My machine brews less coffee although I use the same amount of water. What are the reasons for this?

Limescale deposits may have formed in your appliance. These can slow down the flow of water. This reduces the flow-through capacity, which leads to problems during heating and ultimately to blockages in the flow of water. As a result the amount of water at the output gradually decreases. Please clean and descale your coffee machine regularly to prevent this.

Cleaning & Care

How do I clean my filter coffee machine properly?

Before first use we recommend rinsing the appliance twice with the maximum amount of water and without a coffee filter or coffee. Use the pot to fill the water tank with fresh water. This helps avoid overfilling the tank. The housing of your filter coffee machine and the cold hotplate can be wiped with a soft damp cloth. The glass pot, glass pot lid and filter insert on Melitta® filter coffee machines are dishwasher safe making them easy and convenient to clean (detailed information on each model can be found in the operating instructions enclosed).

The inside of my insulated pot is soiled/ discoloured, what can I do against this?

If this happens we recommend Melitta® Perfect Clean Accessories Cleaner. Its easily soluble formula with active oxygen cleans unpleasant coffee and tea deposits from standard insulated, stainless steel and glass pots. Please note that insulated pots are not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water when cleaning. To avoid damage to the glass flask do not use hard or sharp edged objects (e.g. cutlery, dishwashing brushes or similar) to clean.

Which parts of my filter coffee machine are dishwasher safe?

All glass pots, glass pot lids and filter inserts on Melitta® filter coffee machines are dishwasher safe (detailed information on each model can be found in the operating instructions enclosed).

How do I clean my stainless steel insulated coffee jug properly?

Please note that the insulated pots on our filter coffee machines are not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water when cleaning. Clean the outer surfaces of insulated pots with a soft, damp cloth. To remove stubborn stains we recommend Melitta® Perfect Clean Accessories Cleaner. When cleaning plastic insulated pots with glass flasks please also note that hard or sharp edged objects (e.g. cutlery, dishwashing brushes or similar) should not be used for cleaning in order to avoid damage to the glass flask.

Why should vinegar not be used to descale the coffee machine?

Household vinegar should not be used to descale coffee machines, since this often does not sufficiently remove limescale and fat deposits. It can also lead to a strong, unpleasant vinegar smell, which can affect the taste of your coffee and make it undrinkable. If products containing vinegar are repeatedly used to descale your coffee machine then this can damage the seals and make them brittle. Descaling agents based on mineral acids are also unsuitable as they can damage the pipes and tubes in your coffee machine.
For gentle and thorough cleaning we recommend descalers based on lactic acid or citric acid. Regular descaling will extend your coffee machine’s service life. We recommend descaling using Melitta® Anti Calc Filter coffee; Machines .
Some of our models have 3-in-1 limescale protection with programmable water hardness, a limescale indicator, and a practical descaling programme. This not only reminds you to descale your filter coffee machine, it also provides you with optimal support during the descaling process. This ensures that your filter coffee machine works perfectly.
Please note that repairing damage caused by calcification is not covered by the guarantee.

How do I extend the service life of my machine?

Depending on local water hardness your coffee machine may become increasingly calcified over time. The limescale layer on the heating element prevents optimal heat transfer to the water and causes an increase in steam and noise during the brewing process.
Very heavy limescale deposits can block the pipes and tubes in your coffee machine and significantly reduce its service life. Regular cleaning and descaling prevents this and extends the service life of your coffee machine.

Calcification

Why does calcification damage my coffee machine?

Depending on local water hardness your coffee machine may become increasingly calcified over time. The limescale layer on the heating element prevents optimal heat transfer to the water, which prolongs the brewing time.
If large limescale deposits have already formed, the limescale can be removed with a suitable descaler, but residues often block the coffee machine’s flow system and cause damage.
Therefore, Melitta® recommends that you regularly descale your coffee machine.
Please note that the repair of damage caused by calcification is not covered by the guarantee.

How do I know that my coffee machine is calcified?

- Longer flow-through time
- More steam and noise during the brewing process
- Changes in the taste of your coffee

If any of these symptoms occur with your coffee machine, we recommend descaling the machine immediately. Otherwise your machine may become blocked by limescale deposits and break down. With very severe limescale deposits the above-mentioned symptoms may persist after the first descaling process. If this is the case, we recommend you repeat the descaling process using a suitable descaler.

Please note that repairing damage caused by calcification is not covered by the guarantee.

How do I descale my filter coffee machine?

Prepare the descaling liquid in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it into the water tank. We recommend using Melitta® Anti Calc Filter coffee; Machines. Switch on the appliance and follow the descaler manufacturer’s instructions. If you use an appliance without a descaling programme, turn the appliance off when the descaling liquid has run completely through the appliance.
After descaling, rinse the appliance twice with fresh water. After a brief cooling down period (about 2 minutes) fill the machine with the maximum amount of water. Turn the appliance on and allow the water to flow through completely. The turn off the appliance immediately and then repeat the rinsing process.

How does Melitta® support me in caring for my machine?

We want you to enjoy your machine for a long time. Therefore, a number of our filter coffee machines are equipped with 3-in-1 limescale protection. This includes setting your machine to the local water hardness level to adjust the descaling frequency to match the water hardness level in your area. When your machine is calcified an LED lights up to indicate that your filter coffee machine needs to be descaled. The practical descaling programme makes it easy to care for your machine and is programmed so that your Melitta® Anti Calc Filter coffee; Machines can work most effectively and completely free your machine from limescale.

How often should I descale my appliance?

It is normal for hot water appliances to become calcified. Descaling is one of the essential aspects of caring for your machine to ensure it works perfectly. The frequency of descaling depends on the local water hardness. Melitta® recommends descaling regularly after every 40 brewing cycles to ensure your machine works perfectly.
Please do not use any agents that contain acetic, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid for descaling. Which coffee beans can I use in my grinder?

The Melitta Molino® is suitable for grinding roasted coffee beans.
Attention: Using unsuitable types of coffee beans can block the grinder. Never use freeze dried or caramelised coffee beans in the grinder. Do not put ground coffee in the bean container.

What kind of grinder does the Melitta Molino® use?

The Melitta Molino® has a disc grinder. With this type of grinder you can adjust the grinding level. This means the Melitta Molino® can grind coffee for different types of coffee preparation methods, e.g. espresso machines, filter coffee machines, percolators and french press. As coffee grinders with disc grinder grind more evenly than those with cutting blades they are particularly valued by connoisseurs of coffee.

What advantages does the removable disc grinder offer me?

Grinding coffee leaves oily coffee residues behind. In time fine ground particles are also deposited. Thanks to removable individual parts, the appliance can be cleaned quickly and easily.

How many grinding levels are there on my coffee grinder?

The Melitta Molino® has 17 individual grinding levels. The levels go from 1 (very fine) to 17 (very coarse). So the Melitta Molino® can grind coffee beans for any occasion - from finely ground coffee for aromatic espresso to medium ground coffee for filter coffee/hand filtered coffee to coarse ground coffee for a french press.

How many cups of coffee can my grinder provide ground coffee for?

The dial for setting the number of cups of coffee means you can conveniently choose an amount for between 2-14 cups. The Melitta Molino® then grinds the selected quantity of coffee.

What is the maximum quantity of coffee beans for my grinder?

The bean container on the Melitta Molino® has a removable lid and can be filled with a maximum 200g of coffee beans.

Does my coffee grinder switch off automatically?

Grinding starts at the push of a button. As soon as grinding is finished, the Melitta Molino® switches itself off automatically.

Can I use the grinder to grind other foods?

The coffee grinder is exclusively for grinding coffee beans. Please ensure that no other objects or foodstuffs get into the grinder.

What is the grinder's power input in normal use?

The Melitta Molino® has a power input of about 100 watts.

Storing coffee.

Roasted coffee is a sensitive natural product which can quickly lose its flavour if stored in the wrong way. We recommend you do not store the opened pack near other strongly smelling foods. Protect your coffee from direct sunlight, heat and moisture as these can have a negative effect on the flavour. Store in a cool, dry and odour free place. We recommend that you store the coffee beans in their original packaging.

How much coffee do I need?

The amount of ground coffee you need depends on the type of bean, the grinding level and the number of cups you wish to make. Coffee flavour and strength are personal preferences. Experiment to find out what type of coffee beans, which quantity of coffee and which grinding level are right for you. We recommend using 6-8g of ground coffee per large cup.

Only grind the amount of coffee beans you need to brew as the flavour and aroma of the ground coffee will change if stored in contact with air and other foodstuffs.

What is the recommended grinding level?

Depending on the type of coffee and your preferred method for making coffee, we recommend the following grinding levels for the best results:

Espresso: grinding level 1 - 3
Filter coffee: grinding level 2 - 13
French Press: grinding level 12 - 17

Disturbances

What should I do if the grinder is blocked?

If you hear a piercing noise then coffee beans are stuck in the grinding chamber. Press the on/off switch and pull the plug out of the socket. Clean the appliance as described in the manual.
Note: Avoid filling the ground coffee container completely, as this can cause a blockage.

Why is it difficult or impossible to turn the dial to set the grinding level?

If it is difficult or impossible to turn the grinding level dial then the grinder is blocked by coffee beans in the bean container. Press the on/off switch to start grinding. Adjust the grinding level while grinding.

Why does my coffee grinder grind less coffee at the second grinding?

For the best grinding results always turn the appliance off after use and allow the motor to cool for at least a minute before using again.
